O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill was probably our favorite complementary restaurant overall. Their Reuben was really tasty, but their appetizers left much to be desired. We just enjoyed the vibe of this restaurant as it was casual and had nice booths with windows to enjoy the scenery.

Your assigned musher will introduce you to the dog team, fill you in on the sport of sled-dog racing and snap some photos of you along the way. The Juneau zipline glides above the treetops on Douglas Island (accessed by a high-speed channel crossing from Juneau aboard an expedition craft, which is an adventure of its own). And if you dare to look down, you'll also see the flora and fauna of a rainforest and the remains of an old gold mining operation.

These are required to issue your boarding passes and room keys, a process that was impressively streamlined and took no more than 15 minutes. It’s also worth noting that a passport may be necessary for an Alaska cruise depending on your citizenship and itinerary, so it’s advisable to check this in advance. Start your adventure with a guided bus tour through nearby Hoonah, a Tlingit village. Learn about the culture and heritage of the local people before ascending high into the surrounding hills to climb aboard your four-wheel-drive Kawasaki ATV.
Day 8: Seattle, Washington
Experience kayaking in Alaska the way it should be — away from the crowds — with these unique Ketchikan paddling tours offered by Alaska Kayak Company. Your small group (usually just 4 people) will board the company’s comfortable boat and set off from the Ketchikan cruise-ship dock, leaving the big ships and the crowds behind. The simplest way to book an Alaska shore excursion is through your cruise line. You check a box on an online form before sailing or while on board, and — poof! They send a ticket to your room, and when you walk off the ship, a tour guide will be waiting for you. If you’re considering an Alaska cruise, we wholeheartedly recommend Norwegian Cruise Line for its mid-sized ships and affordable pricing.

After this once-in-a-lifetime experience, we headed to the downtown Skagway, part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. You’ll see restored buildings and authentic artifacts and even get the chance to pan for gold. It’s a step back into the late 1800s, offering an immersive historical experience. For the check-in counters, it’s essential to have your ID or passport and credit card readily available.

Restaurants On The Norwegian Jewel
You'll pass some beautiful scenery, most notably Hurricane Gulch Bridge, where the train crosses a 918-foot bridge poised some 296 feet above a creek. Unfortunately, the viewing platform can be crowded with other travelers blocking views and viewfinders. Simply because it's nice to have time to relax in your stateroom for a good run after traveling to different hotels every night. We were particularly impressed with the ship’s amenities, comfort, and cleanliness.
But what truly simplified our transition was Seattle’s Port Valet Service. This service lets you check in and send your luggage directly from the ship to your flight, making the process as seamless as possible. Kayaking in Sitka offered a stark contrast to our Valdez kayaking trip, where we had paddled amid icebergs. In Sitka, the milder climate enveloped us in lush greenery, while the fog added an air of mystery. You then head to Saxman Totem Park, home to one of the largest collections of authentic totems in the world, where your guide will help explain the stories and meanings behind the poles.
The biggest attraction is a gondola ride to the top of 2,300-foot Mt. Alyeska, where you can get stunning views of Turnagain Arm. Other excursions include hiking, mountain biking, dog mushing or glacier trekking. What could be more amazing than the chance to mush your own dogsled team across a snow-capped glacier? Your three-hour tour starts with a helicopter ride over the Juneau Icefield en route to an authentic Alaskan dog training camp on Norris Glacier that is accessible only by air. Your flight over dense forests, crisp mountain lakes, majestic mountains, and impressive icefalls takes about 20 minutes.
Day 11: Seattle Disembarkation
We offer you a variety of excursions to choose from, in every port you'll visit. Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock-in roundtrip flights for two. Secure these savings online by choosing your nearest airport in step one of your cruise booking, and enjoy air-to-sea made easy. We'll coordinate your roundtrip flights, and transportation between the airport and cruise port. A ride into the mountains on this narrow-gauge railroad is the tour everybody takes when visiting the Gold Rush town-turned-tourist hub.
You can step out on the pontoon, breathe in the fresh air and listen to the silence. Learn why our ships are uniquely designed for the best glacier experiences. With over 27,000 glaciers, Alaska is one of the best places to see these majestic pieces of nature up close.
This can provide you with some personal space away from other tourists. But sadly, you won’t be offered 360 views, so you could get FOMO for not being able to see the other side of the passage. Some of my favorite days on the Norwegian Jewel Cruise Line were the scenic days at sea. We were able to explore Glacier Bay National Park and Hubbard Glacier via the cruise ship.
If you enjoy the experience, it's appropriate to tip a few dollars to your car's guide or to tip a larger amount to the conductor, who will divide it among all the staff. Be warned that visibility can be poor and the vibe creepy when the weather is foggy, as it was the first time I rode the train back in 2013. Ten years later, I caught a break and happened to visit on a clear, sunny day when I enjoyed phenomenal views. Pack Creek Bear Tours offers fully guided adventures to Admiralty Island or Chichagof Island, each home to more than 1,500 brown bears! After a beautiful 20- or 25-minute floatplane ride, you’ll land on a remote beach. Take a short walk to the bear-viewing area, where you can watch these magnificent creatures for hours in their natural environment.
