The new arena was officially opened at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup, the test run for the 2006 World Cup. Both the opening match (Germany 4–3 Australia) and the final (Brazil 4–1 Argentina) were hosted at the stadium. The original stadium was opened on 21 May 1925, after four years of construction, its total cost having been 3.7 million marks (equivalent to €14 million today). The site of a former military shooting range was chosen as the location of the sports park, which also included a fairground and integrated cycling and swimming stadium was designed. The stadium had a capacity of 35,000 spectators.
The first Bundesliga game in the Waldstadion took place on 24 August 1963 – a 1–1 draw with 1. FC Kaiserslautern on the first day of the new German national league. The first major changes to the stadium were made following a game between Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. Almost 70,000 tickets were sold for a stadium envisioned for only 55,000 spectators, and 200 fans were injured as thousands tried to force entry. Generous sizing, even a little too big and didn’t fit our 20x20 frame well. In our windy area I would prefer more grommets, but they are well seated. Overall good product and arrived quickly. This mesh screen was exactly what we needed. Our french doors & large windows are west facing in the Bright hot Texas sun. As part of a naming sponsorship by Commerzbank AG, the Waldstadion was renamed the Commerzbank-Arena on 1 May 2005 for ten years.

Commerzbank agreed to pay around €30 million to the city hosting company as part of the deal. The tarp is also a nice quality, heavy duty mesh and the anti sail bar is of good quality . The problem I have with the 70% mesh tarps is they are not at all close to 70% shade, but actually closer to 30% shade. The quality seems to be ok, but the Arizona desert sun will be the judge of that. The renovated and enlarged Waldstadion was reopened on 14 May 1955 after 19 months of construction work.
